How to Use Trend Radar — 200 EMA Scanner

Trend Radar uses the 200-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) to instantly show whether any asset is in a bullish or bearish trend. Here's everything you need to know.

📈
Bullish Signal

Price is above the 200 EMA. The asset is in a long-term uptrend. Many traders use this as a filter to only take long positions.

📉
Bearish Signal

Price is below the 200 EMA. The asset is in a long-term downtrend. This is often used as a signal to reduce exposure or wait for reversal.

🔄
% Since Flip

How much price has moved since it last crossed the 200 EMA. A large positive % after a bullish flip indicates strong momentum.

⏱️
Time Since Flip

How long ago the last EMA crossover happened. Recent flips (1–4 weeks) often represent the best risk/reward entry points on a new trend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 200 EMA and why does it matter?+

The 200 Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is one of the most widely watched technical indicators in trading. It smooths price data over 200 periods, giving more weight to recent prices. When price is above the 200 EMA, the asset is broadly in a long-term bull market. When below, a bear market. It acts as a self-fulfilling signal because so many institutional traders and algorithms react to it.

What is the difference between Daily, Weekly, and Monthly timeframes?+

Daily uses the 200-day EMA (~10 months) — popular for swing trading. Weekly uses the 200-week EMA (~3.8 years) — a powerful long-term macro filter used by many Bitcoin analysts. Monthly uses a 20-month EMA showing the long-term cycle. The weekly 200 EMA is often considered the most reliable for crypto.

What does "% Since Flip" mean?+

This is the price change since the asset last crossed the 200 EMA. For example, if Bitcoin crossed above at $40,000 and is now $68,000, the % Since Flip is +70%. A fresh flip with a small % change can represent an early entry point into a new trend.

What does "Time Since Flip" mean?+

This shows how long ago the last 200 EMA crossover occurred. "1W 3D" means it crossed 1 week and 3 days ago. Traders look for recent flips (under 1 month) as high-conviction setups — the trend is newly established and price hasn't moved far from the EMA.

How is the EMA calculated on Trend Radar?+

We fetch historical OHLCV data from Yahoo Finance and calculate the EMA using: EMA = Price × k + Previous EMA × (1 − k), where k = 2 ÷ (period + 1). For monthly charts, the EMA period is capped to the maximum available data per asset, so newer coins use a shorter period than Bitcoin.

Why is Bitcoin bearish on the weekly 200 EMA right now?+

If Bitcoin shows Bearish on the weekly timeframe, the current price is below the 200-week EMA. This is historically rare and has coincided with major market bottoms. The weekly 200 EMA is a critical long-term support level. Note: this is a lagging indicator — price may recover above the EMA before confirming a new bullish signal.

Can I track stocks and commodities, not just crypto?+

Yes! Trend Radar includes the top 50 S&P 500 stocks by index weight (AAPL, NVDA, MSFT etc.), 15 major ETFs (SPY, QQQ, GLD etc.), and 19 commodity futures including Gold, Silver, Crude Oil, Wheat, and Coffee. Use the category tabs to filter by asset class.

How do I add a custom asset?+

Type any Yahoo Finance symbol into "Add any symbol…" and click "+ Add Asset". For crypto, just type the ticker (e.g. PEPE) — it auto-appends -USD. For stocks type the exact ticker (e.g. PLTR). For futures use Yahoo format like GC=F for Gold or CL=F for Crude Oil. Custom assets save locally and reappear on your next visit.

Why do some assets show "—" for flip data?+

A dash means the price has not crossed the 200 EMA within the available historical data. This happens with newer coins (APT, SUI) that launched during a bull run and have never traded below their EMA, or stablecoins like USDT that hover near $1 and rarely cross the moving average meaningfully.

Is this financial advice?+

No. Trend Radar is an educational tool only. The 200 EMA is a widely-used indicator but does not guarantee future price movement. Always do your own research and consult a qualified financial advisor before making investment decisions.
